INTRODUCTION

Looking back and moving forward, Ray Of Light continues to be one of Madonna's greatest and memorable musical high points in her career. Key moments are presented in this chronological listing of events that contribute to the Ray Of Light era.

Madonna started to work on Ray Of Light with her collaborators in May of 1997. The actual recording of the album took almost five months, the longest time Madonna had spent on any other album to date. Ray Of Light was recorded at Larrabee Studios North in Universal City, California.

Post-release promotion immediately began in Toronto with a Press Conference at the Sutton Place Hotel and an interview at MuchMusic's Intimate and Interactive on March 6th.

Returning to the USA, Madonna visited The Rosie O'Donnell Show on March 13th for an interview, impromptu Yoga lesson and a performance of Frozen.

Madonna visited The Oprah Winfrey Show on May 29th for an hour-long in-depth interview and performed two songs, Ray Of Light and Little Star, that opened and closed the interview.

On September 1st, Madonna opened the MTV Music Video Awards with an Indian-inspired performance of Shanti/Ashtangi and Ray Of Light and won six awards including Video Of The Year.

Madonna performed The Power Of Good-Bye at the VH1 Fashion Awards and accepted two awards including the Versace Award on October 23rd.

Ray Of Light's European promotional tour began on November 7th and included a stop at the MTV Europe Music Awards with a performance of The Power Of Good-Bye and accepted two awards including Best Album on November 12th.

On February 24th, Madonna attended the 41st Annual Grammy Awards, won four awards including Best Pop Album and Best Dance Recording for Ray Of Light. She also opened the show with a Japanese-inspired performance of Nothing Really Matters.
